The Amber Lounge Fashion show served up an extra dollop of glam to Formula One blingiest weekend. The surprise guest on the front row was TMZ-target Justin Bieber, who resisted egging anyone or running them down with his Ferrari, but I hear he did pull rank and kicked the models out of their dressing room. Jeremy Clarkson was loitering by the bar. Him and Bieber, that could have been carnage.
The models were, as usual, divided into three categories: F1 drivers suited and booted, driver WAGs and kids looking adorable, and 30 proper model ladies wearing very little and showing ’em how it’s done.
The event, which moved inside this year rather than utilising the more picturesque swimming pool of Le Meridien, kicked off with a performance by popstar Pixie Lott. Shirley Bassey was in the audience too. If only she’d got up and belted out Diamonds Are Forever. Damn.
The drivers wearing British tailor Apsley included Daniel Ricciardo, Jean-Eric Vergne, Daniil Kyvat, Adrian Sutil, Max Chilton, Marcus Ericsson, Jules Bianchi and Esteban Gutierrez, the last having the most rapturous support courtesy of his mother.
The professionals were outfitted in sexy Mediterranean-inspired resort wear by A-list-collaborators Melissa Odabash and Julien MacDonald. F1-SD spoke to the pair backstage. “Formula One oozes money, and fashion oozes money,” explained MacDonald. “This is the richest place in the world, it’s all about excess, and we have this incredible jet-set backdrop at the Amber Lounge. People here like to spend their money on clothes”. Pretty candid reason for being in Monaco, then. Melissa and Julien were joined on stage at the end with “friend of the brand” Tamara Ecclestone.
