I’ve been to a few Malaysian Grand Prix Balls now, and last night’s was the biggest and grandest yet. The drivers, as usual, popped in to shake hands with the King and then  whizzed off again, but those of us that stayed were treated to a four-course banquet and concert.

The venue was the Majestic Hotel, an old British colonial hangout which was closed in 1984, left to rot, and finally reopened last year looking more stylish than ever. The ballroom had some fantastic projections on its walls to make it look like we were traveling on the old Eastern & Oriental Express.

The invite-only bash drew a who’s who of KL society and a few Hollywood actors, reuniting Bond girls Teri Hatcher and Michelle Yeoh. Entertainment was provided by R&B smoothie Babyface Edmonds. Once the King had gone home everyone loosened their black ties and it turned into a pretty late night.
